Learning Aim A: Understanding Employment and Career Opportunities in the Media Sector
The Media Industries
I believe it is often overlooked how crucial the media is to our everyday life in modern times. Every morning we wake up to the news, either by newspaper or by other means of distribution. Discovered and reported by Journalists, written by Editors and printed by the press, all so that we are set up for the day and refreshed with the latest knowledge from the world. For entertainment, we may switch on the TV to watch a Programme or Film which has been planned and executed by a team, each with their individual roles towards the production, to film it, to capture sound or even produce graphical animations. A majority of people may like to spend their time reading a book, which has been written by authors and published by different labels, or even switch on the radio and listen to a station, each with their own teams to present news, music or even dramas. In more recent years, social interactive media such as Facebook and Twitter is where millions of the young of the generation can spout their opinions and share content. Some may like to blank out from the world and zone into a video game to escape the rush of everyday life, with advertisements shoved in your face left, right and centre, created and approved by lead marketers who will pitch their ideas on how to brainwash a nation. Because of how often the sector is overlooked, I believe it is important to bring up how crucial media roles really are to our everyday life, and how this sector is going to continue to grow monstrously.
The Entertainment/ News Industry
One of the most important sectors I have previously mentioned is the Entertainment Sector, which also covers the News industry. For our entertainment, we may rely on Literature or on more modern forms, like a film or television, and for this to become materialised, there is much more work than you would think that goes into it. For a film to be produced, you would need workers in the media such as Directors to visualise how they want the film to look, producers who will manage the production, Actors who will bring the creation to life, Cameramen to film the product and Sound Operators to capture the audio, Editors to cut down to what is needed in the piece and for graphic designers to mess with whatever technology is needed to tweak the product further. These are just a handful of main roles it would need for a Film or even a TV programme to be completed, half of the time we don't even think about how each thing we watch on a screen has been materialised, we sometimes just are so invested at what they are acting out that we forget that this isn't real life and that this has been put together by a creative team in the media with a sole idea. This is the industry that interests me the most, with a team of creative individuals working towards putting a product out there for a profit is most enjoyable to me.
The video game industry is also one of the highest sectors in media now because everything is basically digitalised, even the actors are motion captured to track their movements so their animations on screen can flow as naturally as humanly possible. The gaming industry is led by many developers, one main team being Rockstar Games, made famous as the creators of the Grand Theft Auto series and other huge titles. The way they have worked has changed a lot over the years, as technology advances and moving their teams across the world to get a better glimpse at what they are tasked with. The company works digitally through computers however the team focuses on marketing which has been hugely beneficial in sales and advertising, as GTA 5 which was released Seven years ago is still one of the biggest selling games of the year, with one of the most profitable online pay to win systems that the world has ever seen, the constant advertising and updating sees this game walk away every month with millions to add to their already insane worldwide grossing.
Job Roles In The Gaming Sector
Now looking at this, this must require some hard work right? When it comes to digital video game design, there is a lot of talent that is required, it isn't just the producers and management that take control of how people take action, but they rely on them to use their brain and put it onto their work. Big video game producers such as Rockstar are a very well organised and their plans to grow out and improve after every product they sell, is staggering to see.
1. Creative Roles
To start with the more creative side of Rockstar's job roles, lets start with the freelance staff, actors. Video game acting is very similar to visual acting in the way that they have a script that has been written by scriptwriters, creators and envisioned by concept designers, all of which play their part at coming up with how each aspect of the narrative will have, what personalities each of the characters have, what they look like and what the location they're in will look, and so the actors will have to deliver their lines to the best of their ability. However, this is done in a studio in a sound booth with sound technicians operating and recording, they fit in by capturing all the audio files that are going to be used by the characters in game and for other needs. Animations are completed with CGI- like technology to create models and settings, however if using motion capture to use accurate lifelike human motion, some camera operators will be necessary to capture where the actors are going, along with more Sound Editors to adjust their lines just right. Developers, Producers and Directors of each department will maybe take board meetings with them pitching an idea of how they want it to look or what other peoples input might be.
2. Technical Roles
Looking back at what was said about filming for Motion Capture, to set the scene right for actors to get into the mood, designing the set may be beneficial, using and creating props to use on set or set out obstacles for the characters to interact with. To capture this, you will need staff like Lighting Experts and Technicians or even Set Riggers so that the set is safe and secure for the actors to interact with which can be a very dangerous job to deal with. With what has been captured, it is advised that data is secured and transmitted without any problems, which is suitable to hire Data Wranglers to stop any missing footage from slipping through the cracks.
3. Editorial Roles
For the theoretical side of things, it is important to have online presence so that things such as teasers and trailers, or even simple messages from the team can be put online as advertisement strategies to boost their customers awareness and potentially raise the consumer rate for when the product would be released. It is important that things are well documented, Journalists can be a big help in sharing stories and raising the interest in as many people as possible. To begin with, they will need things to publish to the public, so editors for video and photography may be useful to pitch to an audience to show them a taste of what they have in store.
4. Marketing Roles
Marketing, very similar with Editing Roles is all about trying to raise as big as a profit as they can, how they can pitch their ideas and give in to as wide a audience as they can. Advertising is their main focus, maybe they will use photographers to leak shots of behind the scenes of the latest game they have coming out for basically free publicity. Before they know it, posters of the latest games are on billboards all over the country, just like GTA 5 was before it was released, their marketing campaign was a huge success and lead it to ridiculous numbers.
5. Managerial Roles
In managing a team, it is important that they have somebody for each section to report problems to and discuss their roles and what they are expected to do to earn their wages fairly. It can go right from the very top, CEO Dan Houser who left Rockstar Games earlier this month, stepped down, however there is managers beneath him for each part of the business, so that others know what side of work they are focusing with, and using their skills per one thing only. For example, the manager of sound design will be in charge of all staff, studios and equipment used, they will be in charge of managing their creative processes and their technical processes also, so that work is done and can be reported back towards production.
6. Administrative And Financial Roles
Administrative staff control the companies cash flow, where money is coming from and where it will go, if they are within the set budget and if they aren't losing to much to quickly. To be in charge of accounts can be a tough and stressful job, as they are the only ones with eyes to the companies earning, so they'd need to be trustworthy and pull the plug on what is unnecessarily being paid. They can also be in charge of their location, how much rent is paid and where they could relocate to, which is very beneficial to a company like this as it would save money.
7. Ethical and Legal Roles
Every team needs to be aware of the legal side of things, is everything completely owned by them or do they have permission for other companies to have their work presented, copyright and plagiarism is a huge thing when it comes to a production like this, if they do not have the rights to a part of their work, they could be fined and have a major lawsuit on their hands which could postpone or cancel the production due to bankruptcy, putting hundreds of jobs on the line. There can also be a huge note on product confidentiality, where what they work on cannot be discussed with family and the outside world for the sake of the business. The Ethics of the entertainment sector can be ruthless but it needs to be followed and took noted, reviewing the final product can be a lengthy process which is why some products can take a while to be released after their production has been completed, to check and check again is something that has to be took to extensive concerns.

Recruitment And Contracts In The Media
There is a number of ways in which a company such as Rockstar Games may employ someone or scout them at least, one way could be from word of mouth or personal contacts, or what the common knowledge is around of certain workers, potentially working for other companies who they may want to offer positions to. Another way is through online work, if people are posting their work on platforms like YouTube for example, their creative work can be seen by a large number of people and could attract some interest, either intentionally or not. Employment websites such as LinkedIn can be a useful tool to find genuine, professional people who work in the media sector or are willing to get involved within it, they can easily send in their online CV's which have all their appropriate information on their and what they can bring to the team, if they can spare numbers that is. If they take a chance on somebody, what they are contracted to can only vary on what they offer, for example if they are starting out, perhaps they could become voluntary staff and learn from what they work on, without a pay slip at the end of the month. However, if they have experience, this could lead to bigger and brighter things, with bigger contracts that they could build on and make a living from, with part-time and full-time contracts with set hours to a rota, big companies like Rockstar and more than likely to hand out payments to their staff straight away, whereas smaller media teams are more likely to trial and test before splashing their limited budget on someone who may be underqualified. Freelance staff like actors may be contracted to the company until the product is finished and they get what the contract says, this is the reality of many voice actors as many cut ties with their development team after production as they have no longer any need for them.

The ownership of the company was between the CEO's of Rockstar who created the company, Dan & Sam Houser, two brothers. Dan left the company early this month and Sam has become the main Director, Rockstar however is owned by Take Two Interactive, another Video Game Development team.
4. Regulation
One of the main rules of the company is confidentiality as they do not want their latest products to be leaked and exposed at the wrong time as that would be bad for business and release unnecessary hype around a product that may not work out in the end. Merging of companies can also be a possibility as they would follow simple rules and buy out different chains an companies to work for them, or to just benefit them in the long term for a profit.
5. Finance
Rockstar get funded by allsorts of investors and use a lot of their own profits and money from their successful advertisement campaigns to go towards another Game Title, they would also have to fund the staffs wages and pay off remaining debts that have been owed and pay different licence fees to gain rightful copyright over certain products, soundtracks to games such as GTA 5 can be fairly expensive to gain the rights to songs that the consumers would know well, and add a hint of nostalgia.
Ethical And Legal Issues For Employees In The Media
There is a lot to consider when it comes to rightfully working in such a place as the media, in this case being Rockstar Games again. What is expected of employees is to be open-minded and have modern moral views on how society works, having respect for people of all different backgrounds. When interacting with customers, it is important to show full respect and use appropriate language.
For the more Legal sides of things, it is important to make sure that what you are selling hasn't any copyright strikes or laws that could end up with the game becoming a huge court case, for example, make sure that images and music are rightfully given to you and aren't stolen against the creators knowledge. Focusing on the staff, it is expected that you are following rules and that you respect those for their beliefs, and not hating people for what they cant choose and giving them their privacy when needs be.
