Learning Aim D : Working In The Creative Media

 Learning Aim D:
Use networking techniques to explore employment opportunities in the digital media sector

In  this assignment, I will be discussing the various experiences that I have encountered whilst studying Media at Sunderland Colleges, including Work Experience programs, trips and visits to universities across the North East.

Work Experience

Meash Media

Where I learned the most about the trade was through my first work experience in Media, partnering up with a small digital marketing media company in my city that has big dreams for the future, the company had a variety of services such as videography, photography for any need and advertisements, I was eager to get going. I began my journey with them in October 2019 during the second year of my time at Sunderland College, after my successful interview I discovered more about them personally and about what they would expect of me during my time there. From that I was assigned to be Social Media Management in which I was in charge briefly to see how Networking pages are ran, I used many types of software that helped track our posts and how much customers were accessing the page, how many would follow the page in a week e.c.t. I was also in charge of some small editing jobs and camerawork which became handy for a documentary that they filmed and have published online, from this, I came into contact with many different people in the industry such as Actors and Producers that have started up in the industry, created their own movies or have starred in a range of them. One actor that I came into contact with had just came back from Australia after promoting his film 'A Dirty Weekend' in which he starred, written and directed, and during his spare time, he would come to the office and help create contacts for the company. During Christmas time, I took part in a big editing task in which I took clips from a dog show that the team shot whilst I was studying at College and created a compilation of the clips to show off both the companies style. My time with the team had been a blast, learning so much about the industry and the other companies in the North East, adding contacts to my phone book and to guide me into joining university to further my studies with Media, Culture and Communication at the University of Sunderland, which I will attend later this year, with a strong dream to build up further on my knowledge of just how the media works, what jobs and apprenticeships are available in the North East and how I can gain a steady employment plan. If I never had joined the team, I never would've gave University a chance, now I have dreams to follow in becoming a digital marketer or Journalist from my experience interacting with different companies. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the placement was terminated in March 2020, spending half a year there. However I have high hopes in the future to keep them as a Huge contact and continue working for them.

Trips and Visits

University of Sunderland / Spark FM

One of the first trips I went on during my first year studying Media was a Visit to the local University. In there, we took a tour of the campus, sat in a theater to watch an interview with Youtuber Lomahida about her experiences as her full time job being YouTube. We then were brought to demonstrate how a television chat show program would be filmed in the studio, reading from the prompters and then seeing how a radio station Spark AM would be controlled and how a disc Jockey would operate equipment whilst on air, from this I developed creative and communication skills as I was able to pick up with what I was supposed to do. This visit was very beneficial as it allowed me to discover the University and take a tour of the campus, talking to the lecturers and discovering what the course will consist of.

Northern School of Art

Nearing the middle of the first year, we traveled to Hartlepool and its special University, the Northern School of Art that was solely focused on the Arts. We had a tour of the campus and looked at the work that students had completed and also them in work, filming scenes for each others productions. We worked with a professional Foley Artist and we practiced with objects such as Hot water bottles to simulate the sound of a cars tires screeching, learning the skill of Foley Art and how any object can be used for sound practically. The visit did open my eyes to what other universities I would consider and to do what course.

Teesside University

The last University we visited as a class was at Middlesbrough University, we arrived and got chatting to two Journalism graduates from the University. One of which was working in Manchester with UniLad, once interviewing Modern day football Icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the company, the other was a Free Lance Sports Journalist that reports on Football scores when he is called up to review matches in the Lower Tiers of English Football. After that, we mainly discussed with Journalists that had worked for the BBC and are now Lecturers at the University, they told us their stories in working as a journalist and what news they had to uncover in their experiences. From this visit, I did review the idea of myself becoming a Journalist and studying a similar course, as this university was quite far for me to travel

Tyneside Pop Up Film School

During December 2018, we visited a film studio that let students like us express our creativity and create movie trailers within our small groups, from this we filmed each part, acting and using props and developing our skill on editing in Adobe software which came in handy for when we came to complete our first short movie later in 2019. We also learned how to communicate a lot better as a group which helped us decide who is recording what scene and what each part will include. I volunteered to be leader of my group so I decided which scenes would be shot, who would play each part and what the script would be, this gave me great confidence in directing my first film.

Halloween Dance Event

During the beginning months of my second year in College, I volunteered to be part of a filming crew that would record the dance rehearsals for one of the classes that would be taking part in a entertainment act for the Halloween Festival that had taken place in Sunderland. We spoke briefly to the class about what we will be doing and they were happy to dance along as they were being recorded, we done this for many weeks to highlight how much better they got as a class and how coordinated they all danced. The recording of the event was beneficial as it got us used to handling camera equipment and experimenting with the cameras. However, due to work reasons, I was unable to film the final event, however the footage captured went straight to the dance lecturers and was edited by me which also helped out in finding my way across Adobe Software
